Cyan Dye Track Committee Meeting
Wednesday, October 27th, 2004
ShowEast
Ioan Allen called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m.
Ioan stated that all was going well and such that with continued success over the next six months to a year, there may no longer be a need for the Cyan Dye Track Committee.
Ioan mentioned the successful release of Surviving Christmas by DreamWorks, with 2500 Cyan Prints and 1000 silver-applicated prints. Mark Christiansen, DreamWorks’ Operations Head, stated that “the soundtrack situation was a non-issue during this release, with not a single problem.” DreamWorks will continue to release with increasing percentages of cyan prints as they feel very comfortable with the red light reader implementation domestically.
Ioan Allen pointed out that International territories have been stepping up their efforts in installing red light readers and that many are up to domestic percentages. A study from the New Zealand Film Unit stated that New Zealand is 87% red light ready.
Disney sent out a press release during ShowEast about the successful release of Mr. 3000, with all 3000+ prints containing cyan analog soundtracks, and only a single problem in Hazard, Kentucky, where they had an infra-red analog reader. They had their visible, red light reader installed on the Monday after opening weekend. Ted Costas made a joke about “personally writing Disney a check for $27,000.00 due to the missed shows.” In the Disney Press Release, there was a very positive quote from Disney Distribution President, Chuck Viane expressing how successfully this transition is going. The release is posted on the www.dyetracks.org web site.
There was a recent Film Journal International article on “The History of Cyan.” And to date the following studios have made announcements declaring their intent to release in cyan, with more coming: MGM, Disney, DreamWorks, and Miramax.
Mr Allen thanked Ted Costas who was the acting Secretary for this meeting.
It is anticipated that the next meeting will be at ShoWest, March 14th-17th 2006.
