Do you need cyan test films for level and/or frequency response? No, and here's why:
Regular silvered test films can be used with both white light and red light sound readers. A cyan test film is of limited use because it could only be used with a red light reader. Every known format will play perfectly well on a red light reader. If you attempt to play a cyan dye analog soundtrack using a white light or infra-red reader, the sound level and quality will be greatly reduced. It should be noted that all films are subject to some fading and shrinkage, and consequently frequency response and level-set test films should be replaced every 12 months or so to retain accuracy.
Many companies have been working hard to perfect the new cyan soundtrack technology so that audiences will experience excellent sound reproduction of analog tracks on red LED readers. Red LED readers are now standard in all US manufactured projectors and are currently installed in the vast majority of US projectors.
